Flexible

Be flexible.

I am not just talking about a flexible body - that is important too - but I mean flexible in life. I don’t know about you, but I am feeling seriously burnt out these days. In every circle I interact with (work, gym, school etc), this seems to be a common theme these days. Yes we are all as a society chronically over-worked and over stretched. But at the moment we have a few other notable factors weighing on us: Covid fatigue, work rebounding back at us in double, labour and supply shortages, reduced social engagement, darkness/shorter days and poor weather, etc.

All this means MORE STRESS. Poor mental, physical, social and emotional health.

Something’s gotta give sometimes. That’s ok! I like to think I am Wonder Woman. But I’m not. It’s hard to let go of that pride. We, women and moms especially, pride ourselves on wearing that "busy badge”. It’s like a competition to see who’s busiest. This is just a race to the bottom, and I am as guilty as anyone.

But I try to find that balance, that downtime, well-being and all that good stuff. A big part of this is being FLEXIBLE. Adaptable. Forgiving.

I like to workout 5-6 days/week, but this past month or so, I’ve only managed 2-3 days. I don’t love the way this makes me feel physically, but my mental and emotional health has other demands at the moment. I have a lot of extra shit going on this month with work, holidays and kids’s activities, so… something’s gotta give.

Yes I’ve also said you need to make working out your priority. And it remains mine, but to drop a workout here and there for a few weeks is not compromising my priorities. It’s just reasonable balance. Some things are easing off this week, so I know I will be back in the gym full swing before you know it. All good!

Be flexible, be adaptive, forgive yourself and have reasonable expectations. Priorities are not set in stone; allow yourself the flexibility to let them shift around from time to time. That’s life :)
